• Aikido is different from other martial arts because self defence is practiced without intending harm to the attacker. Techniques are based on using the force of an attack against the opponent to neutralise them, using locks, holds and throws. This approach aims to subdue or immobilise an attacker, rather than cause physical harm. This avoidance of conflict encourages harmony, yet can be a powerful way to control aggressors. Threats are neutralised with minimum force, and so Aikido techniques require little strength to make them effective. This makes Aikido suitable for anyone to practise, regardless of their size or strength. Any new student is welcome to our friendly dojo to learn aikido, whether you are a complete beginner, or have trained in aikido or another martial art before. The GoRyuKai Aikido Yoshinkan club was founded and is run by Sensei Malcolm Crawford, 7th Dan Yoshinkan.
